Step 1 - Check Residence Status
If you are subject to immigration control, then you must apply for a Certificate of Approval (COA). If your fiancé(e) is also subject to immigration control, he/she must apply for a COA separately. The COA Application Form can also be obtained by telephoning 0870 241 0645.

Step 2 - Nikah Ceremony Form
Complete a Nikah Ceremony Form at the Mosque. There is no fee to pay. You must provide the following information:
- Date (this must be more than fifteen days in the future (see Step 3)
- Time
- Mehr
You will be provided with the name of the Imam who will perform the nikah ceremony.
Step 3 - Marriage Notice Form
At least fifteen days (warning: you should really allow 4-6 weeks) before your nikah, both you and your fiancé(e) must independently submit a Marriage Notice Form in person or by post to your local Registration Office. The following offices are applicable to Glasgow City:

Each Marriage Notice Form must be accompanied by the following documentation:
- Birth certificate
- If you have been married before:
- Evidence of divorce, dissolution or annulment of a previous marriage
- Death certificate of your former spouse
- If you are domiciled abroad, a certificate of no impediment stating that you are free to marry.
- If you are subject to immigration control, as detailed in Step 1, then you must also provide the following documentation:
- COA
- Passport
If any of these documents are in a language other than English, your home embassy can provide a certified translation into English.
You will have to specify your nikah date, Mosque address and Imam name (see Step 2) on the Marriage Notice Form.
Once you submit the Marriage Notice Form, details of the marriage will be displayed on the notice board at the Registration Office for fifteen clear days before the nikah.
The Registration Office will give you a date on which to collect the Marriage Schedule, which must be collected by either you or your fiancé(e) in person.
Step 4 - Nikah
On the day of your nikah, you must give the Imam the Marriage Schedule and after the ceremony, two witnesses must also sign it.
Step 5 - Return Evidence of Nikah
The signed Marriage Schedule must be returned to the Registration Office within three working days after your nikah so that the marriage can be registered. The marriage certificate will be posted to you.
