Advice on Haq Mehar

Dear Imam,

Assalam O Alykum,

Question from me is, I am about to get married to a muslim girl and the girl I am suppose to marry she has put a condition of hefty demand of Haq Mehar and she said she wants it on wedding night in form of cash, I have told her that I cannot afford that much at the moment due to my tight financial conditions, reply I received that she doesnt want to get marry if I am not paying her full Haq Mehar after Nikkah in cash form, this is £3000.

I have told her that according to religion haq e mehar is given by will and wish not by demand and she is not accepting it and said to me that I should ask Imam first about this issue. Can you please shed some light on this critical issue as I am very stressed due to this. From my point I am trying to perform a sunnah and a good deed. Please reply to this question in the light Hadees and Fiqah that what is right and what is wrong.

Wassalam

A Proud Muslim
