Here's an update that we received via email:
Hi all, ASA
As you will have heard from the news, we have finally crossed the border into Syria. It was a long wait, but we manged to get the world media involved and this applied pressure so that we could go through the border. After the news was released it created enough leverage for the convoy to proceed. An escort was also provided with security guards and the army and we dined in the finest restaurants. We were also shown some of the finest mosques in Damascus. Today we arrived in Jordan and this border crossing was not easy. Again, it was a waiting game and were compelled to make payment to cross over.
For the first six days, we literally lived out of petrol stations and motorway cafes. The good thing about entering Muslim countries is that there is plenty to eat (if you like your meat), and we do not have to go to sleep holding our stomach due to hunger pangs.
The media has also been all over us like fleas on a hound dog. Unfortunately, so far all the grief has come from the Muslim Countries. We have had our highs and lows and I should write a book on the mission when I get back.
It has been very tough for all concerned however we keep our spirits high with prayers and good humour. Today we will be some fourteen days into this mission.
Mixed messages are also being received with respect to news concerning Gaza, Rafah border etc. We also have a direct link with George Galloway's convoy. It seems that we might arrive before him. He has 120 vehicles and another 100 joined him in Libya. We are nine strong, and touching 25 tons of medical aid and we hope to join forces in Egypt.
We have slept at borders, on the floor and in vans, and several times have had no sleep. When we do get a decent hotel it is a God send and very much appreciated. SAS training would be a stroll in the park in comparison. Nevertheless, we are eighteen strong and charged up and focusing on the objective at hand.
Take care
Rizi
PS missing a bhuna lamb with extra chillies and Irn bru. Also clean toilets when you are on the road.
